Where are the digital signatures?

In articles like this one, there seems to be a hubbub about AOL and Yahoo talking about charging companies to use Goodmail for “certified e-mail” services.

This makes me wonder why the hell companies aren’t yet using S/MIME to sign their e-mails sent out to customers.  It really would be trivial, and “essentially free”.

That’s not to say that there aren’t problems.  Certificate issuers need to be held accountable for their policies surrounding certificate issuance, but the problem is one with bad business policies, and not the technology itself.  Mail clients also need to enforce signature-to-from-address matching, as well, but this really is a solvable problem.
