Karen,

So nice of you to mention my book, QUEEN OF THE ROAD The True Tale of 47 States, 22,000 Miles, 200 Shoes, 2 Cats, 1 Poodle, a Husband, and a Bus With a Will of Its Own (Broadway Books). And, yes, one of the many life-changing experiences I had during our year-long, "chucking it all" journey across the country, was that haircut by Nick! For anyone interested, here's what I wrote about the experience in my book (The Miss September joke refers to what I stated in an earlier chpt, ie that inspite of my being a triple-boarded psychiatrist, etc, I consider my greatest accomplishment to be that our bus was the centerfold for Bus Conversions magazine, thus fulfilling a life-long ambition of being a Miss September):

Shortly after we arrived in the city, in the spirit of the year of trying new things, I wrangled an appointment (did I mention I’m a Miss September?) with a stylist, Nick Arrojo, from my favorite reality TV makeover show, What Not to Wear. I knew he’d want to cut it all off, and he did, although seemed rather surprised I didn’t protest. (I was rather surprised I didn’t cry.) Tim came, not only because he wanted to meet a celebrity, but to record the moment for posterity.

Nick went along with good humor, even pointing to the growing pile on the floor, saying, “There, that’s the picture!” I must admit I was a bit taken aback when this former working-class Brit gave me a lesson in royal behavior: As he cut, rather than pin pieces of coif out of the way himself, he had a young woman employee hold my hair back for him. However he did it, I was thrilled with the result and couldn’t help wonder why it always seemed to take me so long to come around to good ideas – traveling around the country in a bus, notwithstanding.

(Funny how during my long-haired childhood, I had taken great pains to straighten it with giant curlers, bobby-pin wraps and other tortures to tresses only adolescents would put themselves through. Why is it that at any age, hair seems to be the great equalizer among women? Although almost every one of us would like to be taller and thinner, it seems pretty universal that those with straight hair prefer curly and vice versa.)

AND, if anyone wants to see a picture of Nick in action that Tim took, go to mywebsite and click on the "news" link. It's there, on the right.

My daughters (20 and 25) and I all flew to NYC (from Austin) yesterday to have Nick cut our hair. He is super nice and a genius. It was expensive but a once in a life-time experience we will remember for a long time. I read a book last month "Queen of the Road" and the author Doreen Orion made an appointment with NIck and I thought if she could do it so could I - life is short etc.. although my brother who lives in NYC thinks I am having a mid-life crisis.

it's like i don't know what to say.here i am thinking i'm the only one who needs a good haircut from someone good but never relized there are so many others out there. like everyone else after seeing knick on the show i wanted him to do my hair. just think, he can look at your faxe hair , eyes and know just what to do. my hair use to be 10 times the thickness. about 15 years ago it got frizzer and frizzer . it still was thick but when i looked at myself bozo kept coming to mind. about 2 years ago i couldn't take it any more so i got a womens disposable razor and took out all the frizzy hair and then every 2 monts i would do that and it did seem to work. but i ended up ruinning my hair and had to cut it short. my hair wasn't as thick but at least there were no frizzy hair. it's either thick hair all frizzy or thinner but softer and it seem to have more bounce. i've been letting my hair grow out for about 1 year. then noticec all my hair was splitends all over. i panicked and got a razor to get rid of the frizzy hair. i did but then stopped because i don't wasnt to ruin my hair again. so i'm just going to let it grow . but like alot of girls it would be a dream to have nick do my hair, look at me and know just what to do. maybe someday. thank you for letting me get this off my chest and sharing it .

Lisa you say you have thick hair. I have learned from watching What Not To Wear and I have tips to improve hair but no I am not a hair stylist but I can help you. What Nick has said with thick hair is to texturize it in thinning it with a razor cut. You also said you want to get it cut short. Are you talking chin length or to the end of your neck length short? Also take into consideration what your hair type is. Is it curly, straight, wavy or coarse? That also makes a difference in what will look best on you. Let me know what you are considering so I can help.

I'm looking for help. I have thick, naturally curly hair about shoulder blade length and I've had the same style as long as I can remember. I would like to have an updated style but all of the hairdressers that I have seen refuse to change it. Since I am over 40 now, I feel that it makes me look really outdated and doesn't give the best first impression. I would like to cut it short and have a Meg Ryan sort of style in mind but I need advice.
