As I’ve mentioned before, I’m prone to making up little ditties (no, not about Jack and Diane) and as it can be for dreams, I like to see what may have influenced them.
I think that it’s been about six months since I began singing a little one-liner. Here’s how I break it down:
Influences:
- The subject material – a dingo – influenced by my introduction to dingoes in Richard Scarry’s Cars and Trucks and Things That Go
and then later solidified by Ford Prefect’s declaration "It doesn’t matter a pair of fetid dingo’s kidneys what you all choose to do from now on" from Douglas Adams’s The Restaurant at the End of the Universe
.
- The style – as I heard the song in my head, it was done with almost a hillbilly twang, but inspired by the ways that Rockapella provided transitional sounds on Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?
As I’ve mentioned, I’ve begun playing with notes to "feel" them out — and my goal with purchasing the MIDI keyboard was to transcribe what was in my head… so first, I give you the way that I first heard it in my head (subject to the limitations that my ripped up throat and untrained, off-key voice can convey).
I then played around with the keyboard until I found a sequence of notes that seemed to fit the way it sounded in my head.
And printed it up as this score (click to pop-out larger image)
I’m still not sure where I’m going with this whole music thing, but I’m taking a liking to it.
